Mud in the face for sitting pretty on statue
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA

FIROZEPUR, FEBRUARY 21: Packets containing soil from a village of this border district will soon reach the hands of MPs in Delhi. It is a novel way of protest that the people are aiming at.

Displeased over the ``apathetic'' attitude of the authorities in the Capital, citizens and social organisations here have resolved to carry to Delhi some earth from the `samadhi' of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. The soil, to be collected from the memorial of the martyrs in Hussainiwala village, will be handed over to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, pressing them to erect a statue of Bhagat Singh in the premises of Parliament.

The plan has been chalked out by freedom fighter-columnist Satya Pal Baghi, who is being supported by two dozen socio-religious organisations besides the local trading community and citizens. ``I would not sit idle until our parliamentarians assure to press upon the Centre to build a statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh near the Parliament building. We also want portraits of Rajguru and Sukhdevin the Central Hall of Parliament,'' the veteran social worker said at a function here on Sunday.

Baghi also called upon Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to erect statues of the martyrs at their memorial site, and also sanction funds for further beautification of the `samadhi' area.
