40 kg heroin seized in TN, three nabbed
CHENNAI, FEBRUARY 21: Three persons including two Sri Lankans were arrested and heroin weighing 39.5 kgs valued at over Rs 40 crore was seized from them by the officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) from a car at Tirunelveli on Sunday. NCB Zonal Director T Rajendran said in a press release that all the three were produced before a court and were remanded to judicial custody. Rajendran said based on specific information, two persons, who were travelling by a private bus from the city to Udangudi, were intercepted by the NCB sleuths. On questioning the two -- Mohammed Nowman (37) and Mohammed Zacharia (38) -- admitted to carrying the contraband to be handed over another person at Thisayanvilai bus stand. The two also produced one black colour zipper suitcase kept in the luggage dickey of the bus and a green trolley suitcase kept behind the last row of the bus. On examination of these bags, the officers found 40 packets of heroin with foreign markings. In the follow-up action, the third person,who was awaiting delivery of the contraband, was also nabbed, Rajendran said. Meanwhile, Rajendran said, the zonal unit had so far seized 313.5 kgs of heroin since the formation of NCB in 1987, the current seizure being the largest single one.
