PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

COIMBATORE, MARCH 14: A 45-year-old man, who was awarded death sentence in 1997 for killing five of his relatives, including three children, will be hanged on March 16.

Govindaswamy, a resident of Veerapalayam in Erode district, had killed his uncle, wife and their three children over a property dispute in 1984. He was arrested the same year and awarded death sentence by the High Court.

According to official sources, the execution of the death sentence has been fixed for 0500 hrs and the accused has been informed about the execution.

Clemency petitions filed by the accused were rejected both by the Governor and the President. The relatives of the accused had appealed to the Supreme Court through special leave petition and the order was stayed till March 6, which was vacated on the day, the sources said.
