Payment to 90 pc cotton growers made -- Deshmukh
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

PUNE, MARCH 18: Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Saturday announced that almost 90 per cent payment to the cotton growers has been made and in another week's time payment to the remaining growers would be made.

Talking to newsmen here, Deshmukh said the Government has given the cotton growers the best rate by including them in the supergrade variety. "This gesture should clearly indicate that the Democratic Front Government is concerned about the interest of the farmers," he said.

Replying to a query on financial misappropriation by several reputed non-government organisation (NGOs), he said: "The Government is aware of it. But unfortunately there is no provision by which the Government can check the work of NGOs. Only the charity commissioner can to some extent monitor it." Hence, it was essential to amend the laws so as to make the NGOs more accountable, Deshmukh added.
