Let sanctions continue, appeal Myanmarese residents
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, MARCH 18: Pro-democracy Myanmarese activists residing in India held a demonstration here on Saturday to appeal to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and US President Bill Clinton to ensure that investment sanctions and the arms embargo on Myanmar continue until a democratic government is formed there.

Addressing a rally, leader of Myanmarese refugees in India and member of Parliament (Myanmar) Tint Swe said: "We want to seek support from India and United States for democracies in Myanmar."

"The leaders of the two largest democracy must come forward to support our cause and raise the issue in the United Nations summit to be held in September," he added.

Dr Swe said the two countries should support implementation of the resolutions on Myanmar passed in the UN general assembly. "We want them to recognise and support the committee representing people's parliament," he added.

Dr Swe said Myanmar had been under the military rule for about 12 years. "refugee problems spilling over to Myanmar's neighbouring countries are the direct consequence of the oppressive measures and forced labour perpetuated by the regime," he added.

He said under the regime, drug-related problems had been on the rise in which some high officials were directly involved.
