Gangster shot dead in Borivli encounter

MUMBAI, MAY 13: An extortionist and hitman Sunil Masurkar alias Gotya was shot dead in an encounter at Borivli this morning. A special squad under Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 10 comprising of senior police inspectors Pramod Rane, Avinash Sawant, Narenadra Shinde tracked Masurkar around 5.00 am near Aksat village at Borivli. When asked to surrender Masurkar fired five rounds at the police. However, in the subsequent exchange of fire the police fired six rounds, following which he was seriously injured. He was declared dead later before admission to Bhagawathi hospital at Borivli.

According to Sawant, Masurkar had come to collect Rs 10 lakh from a diamond dealer at Borivli, though the dealer's identity, however, has been withheld for security reasons.

Police said that Masurkar was involved in the attack on Shiv Sena corporator Pravin Shinde at Meghawadi and SK Builder at Dahisar. He is also named in 18 other cases of serious offenses. A resident of Jogeshwari, Masurkar was a key member of the Dhanajay Shetty group which is active between Andheri and Dahisar.

PATIENT COMMITS SUICIDE: A 50-year-old patient jumped to his death from the ninth floor of the multi-storey building of KEM Hospital in the early hours of Saturday while he was being treated for throat cancer.

According to police sources, Sitaram Shankar Pawar had been admitted to the gastroenterology ward on April 29 for treatment of cancer of the oesophagus. However, his condition was reported to have been deteriorating for sometime and he had severe difficulty in breathing since the cancerous growth was pressing against the respiratory tract, sources said.

At around 4.30 am, he came out into the open gallery in the ward and is said to have jumped from the ninth floor, the police said. His body was seen by the security guards and they informed the Bhoiwada police station. A case of suicide has been registered by the police and further investigations are on.
