Gastro hits entire village in Kolhapur

Kolhapur, May 31: About 300 villagers of the Yamage village in Kagal tehsil of this district have been affected with gastro, following the outbreak of the water-borne disease since last five days here.

The epidemic, which broke out about four to five days ago, continues unabated, with more and more cases being reported at the local hospital as well as Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Civil hospital here.

According to official sources, around 300 people of the Yamage village were infected due to gastroenteritis during the period and majority of them are being treated at local level in a specially opened centre in the village school building.

So far nearly 20 serious cases have been shifted to the Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Civil hospital, sources said and claimed that the disease has not claimed any life yet and added that the epidemic was now under control.

The villagers complained of vomiting and dysentry after the consumption of contaminated water supplied to the village from famous Jaising tank, which is located few distance away from the village.

The potable water is being stored in a well here, near the village from the tank through 200 metre of kneedeep open ditch and from the well it is supplied to the village by network.

As usual, villagers used the open water to clean their cattle, besides their other works, the sources said adding that the contaminated water entered the well, where the drinking water was stored. The preventive steps were being taken in the village to identify affected persons for immediate treatment. Repeated instructions are being given to the villagers to use only boiled water for drinking as a preventive measures.

A medical team is camping at the village to control the situation, the sources said and added various top level medical officials including district health officer visited the village and supervised the situation.

LIGHTNING DEATHS: Two persons were killed after being struck by lightning in the district following heavy rains for the third consecutive day, police said.

Vijay Ramdas Savade died in Varangaon village and Ravindra Shyamsingh Pardeshi at Kasampura, police said here today.

The district had received 170.36 mm rainfall by Tuesday, according to weather office sources. Dharangaon, Bhusawal, Raver, Amalner, Pachora, Bhadgaon tehsil towns experienced heavy downpour yesterday, sources added.

In Nanded, two labourers were killed and six others injured when struck by lightning in Malkapur Kherda village, 5 kms from Kinwat, as heavy rains lashed the district yesterday.

Police said the victims had taken shelter under a shed during the downpour.

The deceased were identified as Prakash Rajji (30) and Rohidas Jogram Rathod (18).

The injured, including two in serious condition, were admitted to Kinwat Rural Hospital.
