Klim withdraws from Olympic 200metres

JUNE 8: World champion Michael Klim has dropped the 200m freestyle from his programme at the Sydney Olympics to concentrate on winning gold in five other events.

Klim, who was named best swimmer at the 1998 World Championships when he won four gold medals including the 200m freestyle, finished second behind world record holder Ian Thorpe at last month's Australian Olympic trials to qualify for the event.

But Klim has now decided to forego his place in the 200m in order to focus his attention on the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly, as well as the three relays.

Grant Hackett, who finished third in the 200m trial, will replace Klim in the event, to add to his commitments in the 400, 1,500 and 4x200m.

"That's a big order for him," Australian head coach Don Talbot said.

"I've pointed out to Grant and his coach that nobody in the history of the sport has ever won the gold medal in those three events."
