Captain Contractor takes command of INS Viraat

NAGPUR, JUNE 28: Captain Rustom Faramroze Contractor, who hails from the city and is an former student of the SFS High School here, took over the command of INS Viraat, the Indian Navy's only aircraft carrier, from Captain S K Damle at an impressive parade held in Mumbai recently.

An alumnus of National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, he was commissioned in the Indian Navy on July 1, 1971. Captain Contractor is a specialist in Navigation and Direction and has commissioned India's first Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) INS Sukanya in South Korea.

He also has the distinction of commanding naval warships INS Rajput and INS Ranvijay and shore establishments INS Jarawa, besides being the naval officer-in-charge at Port Blair and INS Mandovi as commandant, Naval Academy, Goa. He was a graduate of the College of Naval Warfare, Mumbai and Royal College of Naval Studies, London.

Captain Contractor was the chief staff officer (Operations) at the Easter Naval Command, Vishakhapatnam prior to assuming command of INS Viraat.
