Following militant threats, Meghalaya ministers' security tightened

SHILLONG, JULY 4: Security has been beefed up in and around ministers' bungalows and MLAs hostel here following an FIR lodged by Meghalaya Speaker E D Marak, chief whip of the ruling Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum M R Marak and five ministers in the Sadar police station for getting threat calls.

The East Khasi Hills DSP P Raju said, in their joint FIR lodged on Monday, the ministers complained that the militant group, Peoples Liberation Front of Meghalaya (PLFM), had demanded money ranging between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 and had threatened them with dire consequences if they failed to pay up.

The ministers who signed the FIR are Planning Minister Lotsing A Sangma, Social Welfare Minister A K Sangma, Home (Jail) Minister B K Sangma, Food and Civil Supply Minister N Momin and Sericulture Minister B A Sangma.

They also stated that they had received threat calls from the self-styled commander-in-chief of the PLFM Vincent A Sangma on Saturday that they would have to face dire consequences if they did not pay the amount.
