LF puts up candidates for CMC mayor, chairman's post
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

JULY 4: The CPI-M-led Left front which failed to get a majority in the Calcutta municipal corporation, today fielded Kanti Ganguly as its mayoral candidate for the July 8 election to the post.

CPI-M Politburo member Biman Bose said the name of Ganguly, a prominent CPI-M Leader and mayor-in-council in the outgoing CMC board, was unanimously decided upon by constituents.

Bose said the Front also unanimously decided to put Uppurnendu Sengupta of CPI and mayor-in-council in the outgoing board, for the chairman's post.

Asked why the LF was contesting the mayoral election when it did not have the requisite number to form the board, Bose said, "We cannot let the Trinamool-BJP go unopposed."

On the formation of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation board, he said, the Front would decide about it only after the election process was completed.

Trinamool Congress, which secured 66 wards in the 141-ward CMC along with ally BJP, has already announced Subrata Mukherjee as its mayoral candidate.
