NHRC seeks report on Christian attacks
NEW DELHI, JULY 10: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday set a deadline of two weeks for the Centre and state governments to give a report on the recent attacks on Christians and their institutions. The order, which came after two incidents of bomb-blast in Churches in Karnataka in as many days, was issued in view of "non-receipt of report, asked by the Commission last month, from Centre, state governments and Union Territories regarding attacks and atrocities on Christian community." NHRC has also issued a show cause notice to Uttar Pradesh government asking why monetary compensation should not be paid to the next of kin of custodial victim Vijay Kumar Ekka, a key witness in the murder case of a Christian priest in Mathura. Considering a report from Mathura SP into the incident, NHRC has given two weeks to UP government to respond. In yet another other decisions NHRC, in its full Commission meeting here, has sought a report from the Bihar government and state Director General of Police on the alleged torture of a driver and cleaner by sacked Bihar Minister of State for Cooperatives Lalit Kumar Yadav. Taking a suo motu cognizance of a news captioned `Bihar Minister turns sadist; driver's nail plucked out, forced to drink urine' in a national daily, the Commission issued a show cause notice seeking progress of the case and why monetary compensation should not be given to the victims. In view of a criminal case having been registered against Yadav for the alleged illegal detention and torture of the truck driver Deenanath Baitha and cleaner Karoo Ram, the Commission in its order asked for a report within two weeks.
