Child rape victim brought to House
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

AGARTALA, JULY 10: The Tripura Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes over the issue of the rape of a seven-year-old girl allegedly by a ruling CPI(M) activist. In an unprecedented act, the girl was even brought to the House by a Congress MLA demanding justice.

Leader of Opposition Jawahar Saha alleged during the zero hour that the girl was raped on Saturday at Mohanpur, about 20 km from here, by a CPI(M) activist and that the local Sidhai police station declined to register the FIR when the victim's parents went to lodge a complaint.

All the Opposition members joined Saha and started shouting and stalled the proceedings.

The Congress's Ratan Lal Nath, who is an MLA from the area, then entered the House with the victim. He charged that the CPI(M) activist had called the girl inside the bakery saying she would be given biscuits and then raped her. When the girl fainted, the local people rescued her and took her to hospital, Nath said. He too charged that the police had declined to register an FIR by the victim's parents.

Nath also claimed that though the local IGM Hospital treated the girl, the doctor present declined to medically test her to ascertain whether she was raped as the authorities at the Mohanpur police station had not asked for an examination.

The entire Opposition demanded the immediate arrest of the alleged rapist and suspension of the officials at the Mohanpur police station who had declined to register the FIR. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar assured the House that stern action would be taken.
