Labour laws may be amended to check public strikes
JULY 23: The National Labour Commission has assured that the Commission is seriously considering necessary amendments to existing labour laws in order to check the increasing number of strikes in public utilities. The Commission was responding to a submission made by Mumbai Grahak Panchayat citing increasing cases of strikes in public utilities in the state like MSEB, BEST and BMC. This was during a 3-member Commission team's visit to the city for studying various labour related issues in the state. MGP has raised the fundamental question of whether the workers have adequate rights to hold a city to ransom by resorting to a strike, especially in essential public utilites like transprt and municipal services. The consumer forum also pointed out that the trade unions often flout existing orders issued by labour or industrial courts and no action is taken in these cases.
