Floods -- Army on alert in Nanded

NANDED/HYDERABAD, AUG 29: Heavy rains continued to lash parts of Maharashtra for the third day today even as the Godavari river crossed the danger mark in Nanded district, washing away seven persons. The Army has been asked to remain on standby to help in evacuating people from low-lying areas.

In Nanded, torrential rains have cut off several areas from the rest of the district and the Army's help has been sought to evacuate marooned people from Madan Kallur and Sangvi villages in Degloor tehsil, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Ashok Chavan, camping in the district for the past few days to oversee relief operations, told reporters today.

Road and rail traffic has been disrupted as flood waters inundated low lying areas washing away seven persons, on Monday, taking the toll in Marathwada region in the current monsoon to 38. Gusty winds uprotted several trees and damaged crops in many areas, he added.

Official sources in Nanded said about 98 mm rainfall hasbeen recorded in the district since yesterday while the tehsil-wise figures are: Mudkhed 30 mm, Ardhapur 78 mm, Bhokar 22 mm, Umri 22mm, Kandhar 65 mm, Loha 48 mm, Kinwat 22 mm, Hadgaon 53mm, Himayatnagar 53mm, Degloor 58mm, Biloli 8mm, Dharmabad 58 mm and Naigaon 7mm.
