ABVP dominates Rajasthan student union polls JAIPUR, SEPT 10: The BJP's student wing -- Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) -- established its dominance in the Rajasthan university elections yesterday when its presidential nominees for unions of four universities defeated NSUI candidates. Candidates of the NSUI, Congress's students' wing, got only marginal success. ABVP candidates were elected presidents of students' unions of the Rajasthan University, Jaipur, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner, and Agricultural University, Udaipur. Elections are yet to be held at the Mohan Lal Sukhadia University in Udaipur. Ashok Lahoti polled 2,972 votes in the Rajasthan University's presidential election, defeating his nearest independent rival by 360 votes. NSUI candidate Deepak Swami finished fourth, polling 600 votes. ABVP candidate Sonia Khandal was elected vice-president and an independent, Ram Lal Sharma, the secretary. Archana Shekhawat of the NSUI was elected the joint secretary. Kailash Bera of the ABVP was elected president of the Jai Narayan University, Jodhpur. Vijay Vyas and Karni Singh Khinchi were elected senior vice-president and the joint secretary, respectively. NSUI candidate for the post of the secretary, Lakshman Singh Gehlot, was the only one from the party to get a seat. Shiv Kumar Sharma and Dhanpat Suthar were elected presidents of the Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner, and Agricultural University, Udaipur, respectively.
