Gangster killed in encounter
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA


Mumbai, Sep 19: A gangster, owing allegiance to theBhai Thakur gang, was gunned down in an encounter with police at Colaba here yesterday, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that Anthony Orikiya Swami would beariving in the area to meet an accomplice, police laid a trap.

As soon as Swami stepped out of a vehicle along with hisacomplice, police ordered him to surrender. the gangster, however, fired two rounds at the police squad, which immediately retaliated in self defence.

Swami, who sustained bullet injuries, was rushed to anearby hospital where he was declared dead on admission, police said.

His accomplice, however, managed to escape in the chaos.

Police recovered a foreign-made revolver and four livecartridges from the deceased, who was wanted in several cases, including attempt to murder and obstructing government work, police added.
