Danger of new tremor after Japanese quake leaves 116 injured

TOKYO, OCT 7: Residents in western Japan were warned against the danger of a new quake today a day after a powerful earthquake in the region left 116 people injured and more than 2,000 buildings wrecked.

NHK television reported that some 1,800 households were still without water supplies after yesterday's earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the open-ended Richter scale, the most powerful in the country in five years. Initial reports said at least 30 people were injured.

More than 350 aftershocks have jolted the area since yesterday, experts said. Some 700 fire fighters and policemen were on red alert today in case disaster strikes again.

Major routes were reopened to traffic today, while countryroads as well as some railway links continued to be closed.

Yonago airport in Tottori province also remained closed todayas did 138 schools. A total of 2,800 people had been evacuated from their homes andspent the night in communal facilities.
