Karan two good in Honda tennis

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 7: Karan Rastogi, the second seed, bagged a creditable double in the Hero Honda MSLTA Circuit Open Junior State Ranking Tennis Tournament. He scapled top seeds Rishi Behl and Narasimhan Keshavan in the boys under-16 and under-14 finals, respectively, and cornered the limelight at the CCI courts on Dassera Day.

Seed No 2 Sagarika Phadke also claimed a double in the girls' section. She beat unseeded Sonali Sanap and third-seeded Toshi Sinha for the under-16 and under-14 crowns, respectively.

Results of finals:
Boys under-16: Karan Rastogi (seed 2) bt Rishi Behl (top seed) 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-4. Under-14: Karan Rastogi (seed 2) bt Narasimhan Keshavan (top seed) 6-0 6-0. Under-12: Arnav Jain (top seed) bt Agnel Gladwin (seed 2) 6-2 6-0.

Under-10: Debendra Das (top seed) bt Akash Wagh (seed 3) 6-3 6-1.

GIRLS under-16: Sagarika Phadke (seed 2) bt Sonali Sanap 4-6 6-0 6-4.

Under-14: Sagarika Phadke (seed 2) bt Toshi Sinha (seed 3) 6-2 6-2.

Under-12: Nalini Malayya (top seed) bt Neena Sharma (seed 2) 6-1 6-4.

Under-10: Supriya Malayya (top seed) bt Surbhi Varma (seed 2) 6-0 7-5.

Atul Ranade shines
A Knock of 79 by Atul Ranade helped Catholic Gymkhana score 156-9, after being 68-7 at one stage, against Kanga League champions National Cricket Club in the first-round of the Police Shield Invitational Cricket Tournament, sponsored by Jayantila Khandwala & Sons and Khandwala Securities, at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy ground, Oval, on Saturday.

In the other match, Mumbai University did well to score 218-5 against Bombay Gymkhana at the Islam Gymkhana, Kenedy Seaface.

Brief scores - Group A: MCA Colts 137-4 (Kiran Powar 45, Nishit Shetty 32) vs PJ Hindu Gymkhana; Islam Gymkhana 161-4 (Vikram Torvi batting 54) vs Mumbai Police; Shivaji Park Youngsters 106-5 (Mandar Phadke batting 39) vs CCI.

Group B: Catholic Gymkhana 156-9 (Atul Ranade 79; Rajesh Pawar 3-47) vs National; Parsee Gymkhana 99-4 (Anil Sakpal 31) vs Shivaji Park Gymkhana; Mumbai University 218-5 (Vinayak Mane 30, Ashutosh Narkar 41, Amit Dhulap 47, Kamran Chowdhary 46; Shishir Hattangadi 3-48) vs Bombay Gymkhana.

Pooja triumphs
NATIONAL champion Pooja Galundia of Rajasthan scored her first win in the round-robin league stage, when she crushed seasoned campaigner Renu Bharkatiya of Madhya Pradesh 3-0 in a Group-B match of the Second CCI Women's Invitational Snooker Tournament, on Saturday.

Pooja was upset on the first and second days by local cuiests Sangeeta Hemchand and Jagruti Patel, respectively. Today she played very well and with a break of 39 managed to win the first frame 72-29 and then never looked back when winning the next two frames 66-24 and 78-29.

Former National champion Judith Walia of Karnataka was shocked by her state-mate M Chitra 1-3 in Group-A.

Reigning champion Varsha Majmudar of Maharashtra too had a good day when she sidelined Kamala C Babu of Tamil Nadu 3-0.

Brace by Kunal Prasad
Kunal Prasad netted both the goals as Ryan International `A' beat Madanpura 2-0 in a Division I-C game of the MDFA Football League at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, on Saturday.

In the Division I-B encounter, India Culture League (ICL) trounced Punjab National Bank 3-0. Ranjit Dutta (2) and Suresh Arya were the scorers.

Jocelyn 'tricks
A Splendid hat-trick by Jocelyn Mathews helped Traffords to rout Village Boys 3-1 in the 12-team NIIT-sponsored Kalina Football League at the St Mary's High School ground, Kalina, on Saturday. The losers reduced the margin through a self-goal.

Rink football
The youth of St Paul's Parish will conduct the Late German Gomes Rink Football Tournament at the St Paul's ground, Dadar, from October 15. For details, contact Francis Alvares on Tel: 418 1755 or contact any of the youth on the St Paul's ground between 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm. The last date for entries is October 11.

Schools cricket
The MSSA-Colgate Inter-School Harris and Giles Shield Cricket Tournaments will commence on October 31. Schools should collect their draws and fixtures from the Association's Office.
