Judith toils, Varsha cruises

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 9: Former National champion Judith Walia of Karnataka and defending champion Varsha Majmudar of Maharashtra scored contrasting victories in Group-A round- robin league matches of the second CCI Invitational Women's Snooker Championship at the CCI, on Monday.

Judith rallied well, after dropping the first frame, to pip local cueist Meenal Thakur 3-2, while Varsha trounced her team-mate Neeta Sanghvi 3-0. Vidhya Pillai of Tamil Nadu scored her second victory when she defeated her team-mate Kamala C Babu 3-1 in yet another Group-A league match.

In the Group-B matches, local cueist Jagruti Patel subdued Usha Khandelwal of Maharashtra 3-2 while R Umadevi of Karnataka beat another Maharashtra cueist Anuja Thakur 3-1.

Results - Group-A: Judith Walia (Knt) bt Meenal Thakur (Mah) 3-2 (32-41, 76-46, 69-62, 12-48, 69-27), Varsha Majmudar (Mah) bt Neeta Sanghvi (Mah) 3-0 (71-49, 47-35, 63-60), Vidhya Pillai (TN) bt Kamala C Babu (TN) 3-1 (52-21, 58-32, 21-45, 55-31), Meenal Thakur (Mah) bt K C Babu (TN) 3-0 (53-18, 54-36, 66-14), Varsha Majmudar (Mah) bt M Chitra (Knt) 3-1 (54-49, 55-26, 22-53, 54-24), Vidhya Pillai (TN) bt Ritu Shrivastava (MP) 3-1 (66-46, 16-47, 56-16, 83-38).

Randhawa way ahead
On a winning streak, ace golfer Jyoti Randhawa of Delhi opened a massive lead of 24 points from Calcuttan Indrajit Bhalotia and accelerated to the top of the Mahindra Golf Rankings. He now leads with 70 points leaving in his trail the next four in mid-forties.

The Mahindra Rankings offer Rs. 8.5 lakhs to the champion golfer of the year and Rs. 1.25 lakh each to the rookie and the best putter.After five events of the PGA India tour 2000-2001, Rahul Ganapathy of Mysore is the leading Mahindra rookie and V Jayandran of Chennai is the leading the Mahindra putter. Manoj Adhikari, Manoj Mattarai and Herald Lobo scored in that order for NMSA.Companeroes held Goan Sports Association 1-1 in a Division I-B tie. Vello gave Goans the lead and Ryan Cordeiro restored parity for Companeroes.In yet another game, World Network defeated Oberoi Towers 3-1 in a Division II play-off game. Nilesh Figueredo, E Misquitta and Terrence Dias netted for the winners. Sunil Gonsalves reduced the margin.

Ramesh supreme
Ramesh Rawat of Chennai won the ColorPlus National Bowling Championship, beating Rajat Grover of Delhi in an intense final battle at the Superdrome on Sunday. Ramesh will now represent India at the AMF World Cup to be held at Lisbon from October 15. Ramesh scored an aggregate of 1148 points followed by Rajat who scored a total of 1142.
