Rajan case -- Good there's no treaty, says Bhujbal
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

MUMBAI, OCT 11: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal feels that the fact that there is no extradition treaty between Indian and Thailand should help getting Chhota Rajan back faster rather than hinder it.

``Yes, we do not have an extradition treaty. But since his passport is false, his visa stands cancelled automatically. In that event, he becomes stateless. Under such circumstances, the Bangkok police will have no option but to deport him to his parent country,'' said Bhujbal.

Bhujbal believes the legal processes involved in extraditing somebody are too cumbersome and take a long time. ``We have an extradition treaty with United Kingdom, but for last three years, we have not been able to secure the custody of music director Nadeem Saifee, one of the accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case,'' Bhujbal said.

He said he had met Union Home Minister L K Advani during his visit here in connection with the Prime Minister's surgery to brief him on the Chhota Rajan episode and the need to get him back in Mumbai.

Bhujbal said to facilitate the coordination between Mumbai Police, Ministry of External Affairs and Bangkok, he has deployed Joint Commissioner of Police D Shivanandan for the purpose. ``Shivanandan is camping in New Delhi to coordinate with the other agencies,'' he said.

Replying to a question, Bhujbal said his government has suggested to the centre to confiscate the passport of Chhota Rajan through the Indian High Commission in Bangkok.
