Paes, Chang bow out; Kuerten cruises

TOKYO, OCTOBER 11: India's Leander Paes bowed down to his Italian opponentAndrea Gaudenzi 3-6 2-6 to crash out of the Japan Open tennis championshiphere on Wednesday.

Gaudenzi will now take on French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten, who defeatedNicolas Massu of Chile 7-6 (7/5) 6-0, in the third round on Thursday. Paeshad cleared the first hurdle on Monday, beating Fredrik Jonsson of Sweden ina rain-delayed match on the opening day of tournament.

Meanwhile, former finalist and Asian crowd-pleaser Michael Chang alsocrashed out in his opening match losing 7-5, 6-4 to Filipine-American CecilMamiit.

Zimbabwe's Byron Black, seeded sixth, dispatched German Daniel Elsner 6-2,6-1 while South Korean Yong-il Yoon accounted for 14th seed David Prinosilof Germany 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The Netherlands' 12th seed Sjeng Schalken showed two-time French Open winnerSergi Bruguera the door 6-4, 6-2; Swede Jonas Bjorkman, 13th, defeatedItalian-coached Japanese Takao Suzuki 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

There was a win into the third round for Haral Levy, the Israeli 15th seed,as he beat Korean's Hyung-tak Lee 6-2, 6-4.

Qualifier Eric Taino beat American compatriot Vince Spadea 6-3, 7-5. Swedishqualifier Kalie Flygt made a breakthrough for the third round over Andre Saof Brazil 6-4, 6-2.

Hingis exacts revenge
ZURICH:
World No 1 Martina Hingis cruised past Jelena Dokic in straightsets in the second round of the Swisscom Challenge on Tuesday, avenging aWimbledon loss to the Australian in their previous meeting.

Hingis took 51 minutes to dispatch the Australian 6-3 6-2, erasingunpleasant memories of her 1999 first-round Wimbledon defeat to Dokic, thenranked 129th in the world, in what was considered the biggest upset in Openera history. ]In first round action earlier in the day, a sullen JenniferCapriati scraped past wildcard Lina Krasnoroutskaya 5-7 6-3 7-6 (6)
