SRINAGAR, NOV 3: An Indian soldier was killed and a mosque damaged when Pakistani troops fired artillery shells across a military control line in the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Friday.

They said four civilians were wounded in the artillery explosions.

"During the last 24 hours, in continued shelling from across the border, four civilians got injured and a house and a mosque were damaged in Gurez sector," a police statement said.

A police official said an Indian paramilitary soldier was killed when an artillery shell fired by Pakistani troops exploded in Nowgam sector on Thursday evening.

Gurez and Nowgam sectors lie on the Line of Control (LOC) in Baramulla district, 54 km north of Srinagar.

The statement said there was also shelling of Kern and Karnah sectors in the neighbouring district of Kupwara.

Security officials say artillery duels along the LoC have increased in recent months, resulting in many deaths on both sides.
