Bhujbal debunks Shakeel tape

Mumbai, Jan 11: Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal today described as baseless the report appearing in a section of the press that the tape containing the conversation between underworld don Chhota Shakeel and film financer Bharat Shah was fake.

``Since both film producer Nazim Rizvi and Bharat Shah have admitted before the police that it was the voice of Chhota Shakeel and that they spoke to him, there is no need for the Mumbai police to take cognisance of such a false report,'' Bhujbal told mediapersons after the two-day special meeting of the cabinet.

Bhujbal said it was unfortunate that the said newspaper has attached importance to the version of Chhota Shakeel instead of the evidence gathered by the Mumbai police.

The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated that the arrest of Shah had nothing to do with the latter's reported proximity with Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray.

Bhujbal also sought to allay fears in the film industry following arrests of Shah and Rizvi, saying the police would not take action against any cine artistes without sufficient evidence on record.

``There is no need to press the panic button for those working in film industry and all interrogations would not necessarily lead to arrests in the case involving Mafia-Bollywood nexus,'' he added.
