Arroyo accepts Philippine police Chief's resignation
REYTERS

MANILA, JAN 21: Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Sunday accepted the resignation of police Chief General Panfilo Lacson whom opponents accused of human rights abuses during the reign of ex-President Joseph Estrada.

"The President accepted the resignation of Panfilo Lacson,"a presidential aide told reporters, adding that Lacson's deputy, Leandro Mendoza, would take charge "in an acting capacity".

Estrada lost his last major support on Friday when staunchally Lacson withdrew his support for the embattled administration.

Lacson announced his decision hours after the country'smilitary leaders bolted from Estrada and joined Opposition calls for him to quit. He gave in his resignation letter on Saturday "by virtue" of the fact that he was appointed by Estrada, the letter said.

Leftwing opponents of Estrada have accused Lacson of humanrights abuses and opportunism in jumping ship just before Estrada fell.
