Pentagon sees closer Indo-US ties
WASHINGTON, FEB 11: A senior official of the Pentagon has indicated that US will have to move closer to India by 2025 as India will be a major military and economic power and also a force of stability and peace in Asia, media reports said. According to a sweeping review of American military strategy, ordered by President George W Bush, head of the Pentagon think tank, Andrew W Marshall, has said India will develop its inherent strength in the coming years while the threat for the US in Asia will be from China’s hegemonistic ambitions. His published views, quoted by the media, were that the US had to be prepared to fight major battles with heavy tanks and other weapons against the largest conventional force in the world, namely that of the Soviet Union, and that the future threat may in Asia where it may have to go to defence of Taiwan if it is attacked. That would require lighter armed and mobile forces in smaller groups of integrated forces. The Wilson Centre, funded by Congress, has launched a major study by prominent academics bluntly called the Working Group on Hegemony. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
