Meanwhile, US-based seismologist Lalliana Mualchin has warned of a Gujarat-like disaster in Aizawl in the event of a high intensity quake in Mizoram, which falls in the highest seismic risk zone in North-Eastern region.

"Most of the buildings would collapse killing hundreds ofpeople if tremors hit the UN-planned Aizawl city," said Mualchin.

H.Lallenmawia, superintending geologist of the state Geology and Mining and executive member of the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology, agreeing with Mualchin said Aizawl would witness massive destruction in case of a high-intensity quake as safe building codes have not been followed in constructing high-rise buildings.

The people in the town never considered geological and design safety codes, while cement, iron rods and other building materials used were of sub-standard quality, he said.
