NHRC demands State report on Kothewadi
AHMEDNAGAR, FEB 14: The National Human Rights Commission has sought a detailed report from the State Director General of Police on the Kothewadi rape and dacoity incident that had rocked the State about a month back. The NHRC directives came in the wake of a petition filed by the staff and students of a local law college. New Law College principal Ashok Yende, 13 college teachers and 105 students filed the petition after visiting the village on January 25. The petition sought a detailed probe into human rights violations at Kothewadi, action against the lethargic government officials and financial aid to the victims. The petition was filed at the Commission's New Delhi office on January 27. A gang of unidentified dacoits had unleashed a rein of terror in Kothewadi village on the night of January 16. They gangraped women and looted the village. After the initial furore, the State Government handed over the investigations to the State Crime Investigations Department. The investigation came to a standstill after the CID arrested a few persons. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
