Philippine police seize fake U.S. Bonds

MANILA, FEB 20: Philippine police working with U.S. Officials have seized over $2 trillion worth of fake Federal Reserve bonds certificates and arrested a suspected Filipino trafficker, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

The confiscation was made over the weekend in Cagayan deOro city in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, General Leandro Mendoza, acting Chief of Philippine National Police, said in a press statement.

Nestorio Gualberto, Chief of the national police criminalinvestigation group, said the fake items were believed to have been circulated only in Mindanao, but authorities were investigating whether any had been smuggled abroad.

The police said they were seeking six other suspects inconnection with the operation.

Mendoza said that the haul also included fake Argentinepesos, fake German bonds certificates and fake Japanese yen.

The police criminal investigation group carried out theoperation with the Philippine central bank and the U.S. Secret Service agents, the statement said.

The Filipino arrested in the raid was suspected oftrafficking in the counterfeit currency and Financial instruments, it added.
