Mattannur (Kannur), February 20: Two masked men attacked an 18-year-old activist of the All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), the women's wing of the CPM, at Kodolipuram, near Mattannur and tattooed the letters R-S-S on her left leg using a knife. They also shaved both her eyebrows.

The victim, Bindu, daughter of Chakkorakandy Gopalan, a farmer, had been actively involved in the movement against the illicit liquor trade. She has been admitted to the Government Hospital here. The Mattannur police have registered a case and started a probe.

The district committees of the CPM and the AIDWA termed the incident as the handiwork of BJP-RSS men who were determined to create trouble in the CPM stronghold. Both organisations have demanded immediate action to nab the culprits.

According to the police complaint, the assailants waylaid Bindu around 6.45 pm on Friday near a granite quarry while she was on her way home from a vegetable field, where she was employed. They verbally abused her before shavig her eyebrows using a razor blade. Then they allegedly tattooed R-S-S in English on her left leg using a knife and disappeared in the dark. At first, she declined to lodge a formal complaint and refused to be admitted to a hospital fearing further attack. It was only on Saturday afternoon that AIDWA district leaders intervened and Bindu was taken to the hospital.
