Where the Rly rupee comes; where the rupee goes
NEW DELHI, FEB 26: Nearly half of every rupee earned by the Indian Railways is consumed by its employees in the form of salaries and other dues, whereas a meagre one paise is spent on development works. As per the Union Railway Budget 2000-01 tabled in Parliament today, from every rupee earned during 1999-2000, the railways spent 37 paise towards staff wages and other allowances, whereas pension fund outgo consumed another 11 paise. Only one paisa was used for development fund during the year, while a similar amount was accounted for by capital fund. The other major outgo for Railways during the year under review was fuel which accounted for 17 paise of every Railway rupee spent. As against this, a massive 65 paise of every Rail rupee came from goods traffic earnings, with passenger earnings lagging behind at 28 paise for every rupee earned. Miscellaneous recepits accounted for three paise of every Railway rupee earned, whereas other coach earnings and sundry other earnings each contributed two paise to every railway rupee earned during the year under review.
