HC orders burning of 3 lakh animal products
NEW DELHI, MARCH 13: To deter poaching and trading in animal hides and products, the Delhi High Court today allowed the Chief wildlife warden of Delhi Government to burn over three lakh pieces of wild animal skins, hides, horns and other items seized during the past several years. A bench comprising Justice anil Dev Singh and Justice O P Dwivedi passed this order while directing the authorities not to burn five head mounted trophies of clouded leopard, leopards and tigers. These five items should be given to natural history museums for preservation and display, the bench ordered. Pursuant to a news item published in a daily regarding the decision of the wildlife department to burn these items worth crores of rupees, an advocate Maulana Swarup had petitioned the High Court saying these should be preserved. The court had directed Wildlife Institute of India (WII) to inspect the seized articles and give a report so that the court could form an opinion whether or not these articles are to be destroyed.
