BANGALORE, May 26: The Karnataka Government is chalking out a plan to
provide drinking water to all villages in the State in the next three
years. The plan will ensure availability of about 55 litres per capita
daily to rural areas at a cost of Rs 900 crores.
VELLORE, May 26: Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), Ranipet, has installed
desalination plants in various parts of Ramanathapuram district in
Tamilnadu. As per the contract given by the Tamilnadu Water Supply and
Drainage Board, the plants would help in desalination of sea water and its
conversion into drinking water, thereby providing water supply for the
villages of the district.
CHENNAI, May 26: The Public Works Department in TN will undertake a study
to examine groundwater exploitation in the State. The 384 panchayat union
blocks would be divided into 3 categories, based on the level of ground
water extraction in each block.
CHENNAI, May 27: The Bharteeya Govansh Rakshan Samvardhan Parishad has
appealed to the TN Government to ban the religious sacrifice of thousands
of cows during the Izthima festival this week in North Arcot district. The
Parishad has pointed out that religious slaughter of cows has been banned
both by the Centre and by Tamil Nadu itself, and urged Government to
prevent the killing of the animals.
CHENNAI, May 26: NIB CID personnels destoryed Rs 45 lakh worth ganja plants
grown on some 3 acres of land during a recent raid. The plants destroyed
weighed 2175 kg.
UDHAGAMANDALAM, May 26: The Tamil Nadu Green Movement has urged the State
Government to preserve the ecology of the Manjampatty valley, a vital
wildlife corridor. TNGM General Secretary A Rangarajan said the number of
pattas being issued for settlements in the area were on the rise, and some
persons were also cultivating cannabis in the area, threatening the ecology
of the valley. He suggested that alternative sites could be identified to
re-settle the people who had come to stay in the 300-acre area, which was
also an important watershed for River Amaravathy.
CHENNAI, May 26: A minimal invasive technique was used in a heart valve
replacement surgey performed at the Vijaya Heart Foundation, here.
During the operation, a 9 cm hole across the middle portion of the chest
was made to replace the arotic valve which was reported to be narrow and
leaking. The new technique involved short duration, less loss of blood and
is less painful, according to Dr. Janardhana Reddy and Dr. Ram Mohan.
CHENNAI, May 26: The Hindu Munani is to set up what it calls `Hindu
Panchayats' in the riot-torn areas of Tirunelveli, Madurai, Ramanathapuram
and Chinnamanur in TN, with the aim of promoting peace among people of
different communities. State organiser of the party, Ramagopalan, said
peace committees, with members from all communities, would also be set up
in the areas which were rocked by caste clashes earlier this month.
CHENNAI, May 26: A statue of Annai Velankanni, Our Lady of Good Health,
will be installed at the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception in
Washington DC, on August 15 this year. The Indianised statue was made by
Italian sculptor Libracci, at a cost of Rs 5.25 lakh, according to Rev
Julian Antony, from Washington. The statue, which has been brought to
India, will be taken to the Basilica Church at Velankanni, near
Nagapattinam, TN, for consecration.
COIMBATORE, May 25: Three persons were struck dead by lightning in two
separate incidents here on Sunday, when the city was lashed by heavy
thundershowers. One of the deceased was a 12-year-old boy, while the other
two were part of a group playing cricket at a ground in the Gandhi Nagar
area. While two of the players succumbed at hospital, others of the
30-member group are undergoing treatment.
SALEM, May 26: The TN Government's move to reserve 15% seats in engineering
colleges for rural students is looked upon with scepticism by the rural
teachers in the State. They have urged the Government to ensure proper
identification of rural schools in order to benefit the needy.
KANNUR, May 26: Two youths, who were among a group of 5 devotees who
visited the Muthappan Temple, near here, are suspected to have drowned in
the Parassini river. According to temple officials, the two were last seen
swimming in the river. The bodies of the missing are yet to be recovered.
