Tidbits about IIT-Madras

Founded in 1959, IIT-Madras is chronologically the third among the Indian Institutes of Technology established by the Government of India to provide high quality education in the fields of engineering and technology.

The Institute was started with technical assistance from the Government of West Germany[90] and has a strength of nearly 360 faculty and 4,500 students (2,500 undergraduate and 2,000 postgraduate).

The total size of the campus of 620 acres and is a located in a wooded land of about 2.5 km˛. IIT-M has 15 academic departments and research centres, and nearly 100 laboratories. The campus has 13 hostels.

The institute's latest offering - The Management Programme has been showing stellar performance within 4 years of its inception.

Apart from Saarang and Shaastra, the Open Air Theatre (OAT) is the most interesting asset of IIT-Madras.

The Open Air Theater is used to screen movies and host rock shows and Carnatic music concerts.The OAT is the venue for the weekly Saturday night Film Ces. It can seat over 7000 people and usually plays to packed capacity.
The Indian Institutes of Technology need no introduction either in India or abroad, for their alumni have already made their presence felt everywhere. The Institutes were set up by the Government of India as 'Institutions of National Importance' and almost all reputed international academic benchmarks have given them high rating.
