

Tidbits about IIT-Roorkee
IIT-Roorkee was originally known as University of Roorkee, and was established as early as in 1847 as the first engineering college in the British Empire[91].
The College was renamed as The Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. The college was granted IIT status in 2001.
The Institute offers Bachelor's degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate degrees in 55 disciplines.
The total faculty strength is around 375. The campus is about 360 acres in size and has a total of eight hostels.
Since its establishment, the institute has played a vital role in research and providing technical manpower and know-how to the country.
The Institute ranks among the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development.
It is considered a trendsetter in education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering.
The technical fest of IIT-Roorkee is called Cognizance and the cultural fest is called Thomso. There are two campus magazines brought out by the students of IITR namely Kshitij and Watch Out.
The Information Management Group IMG, a Part of Information SuperHighway Centre, is fully managed by the students and hold responsibility for the Institute Website, Intranet Site, and other web-services.
This is completely managed by undergraduate students at Roorkee.
The Indian Institutes of Technology need no introduction either in India or abroad, for their alumni have already made their presence felt everywhere.
