This tribute to our war heroes has been made possible by the efforts of The Indian Express and its readers, the Union Territory of Chandigarh, citizens of India and our esteemed donors, with whose help we have collected Rs. 57 lakhs. However this is not the end of our endeavour. Out of our target of Rs1.14 crores, we still need Rs.57 lakhs for the welfare of war widows and their children. The Indian Express group has taken the initiative with an initial contribution of Rs 1 lakh. The project, designed by students of Chandigarh College of Architecture, was unveiled by Lt Gen (Retd) J F R Jacob, a 1971 war hero, on April 28, 2003 and inaugurated by President A P J Abdul Kalam on August 17, 2006.

President Kalam in a letter he wrote to The Indian Express, suggested we also set up/ upgrade schools and hospitals in villages for those who can't afford quality education or medical care. So we are doubling our earlier target: from Rs 57 lakh for the memorial to Rs 1.14 crore, the additional fund for improving schools and hospitals. Together, we can translate the President's thought into action.
