London was chosen on Wednesday to host the 2012 Olympics after the elimination of Paris, Moscow, New York and Madrid.
Following are a selection of quotes reacting to the vote by the International Olympic Committee members.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair: "It is a momentous day for London. It was genuinely a team effort. (Bid leaders) Seb Coe and Keith Mills and the team were just awesome throughout. They were just brilliant. It is not often in this job that you get to punch the air and do a little jig and embrace the person standing next to you."
French President Jacques Chirac, praising 'fair play' shown by the French bid team: "The head of state congratulates the city of London which will have the honour of welcoming the Olympic Games and Paralympics in 2012. He wishes good luck and full success to the British authorities and people in the organisation of the 30th Olympiad."
London bid chief Sebastian Coe: "We are taking home the biggest prize in sport. I always knew this was going to be close. I am absolutely ecstatic. This is our moment. The spinoff for sport in the UK will be huge."
London Mayor Ken Livingstone: "We will promise you a Games you will never forget."
British rowing Olympian Matthew Pinsent: "This is so special. It was four votes between winning and losing -- as close as our race in Athens. The emotion in the last couple of hours has been incredible."
England soccer captain David Beckham: "It's just incredible. To have the Olympics in London is something special."
British Sports Minister Tessa Jowell: "We came from nowhere to win the Olympic Games, that is quite something. We want to hand the torch to the next generation."
Philippe Baudillon, chief executive of the Paris bid: "We are very, very disappointed but it was a very good competition. We thought we could win but obviously we did not. That's life."
Thierry Rey, former Olympic judo champion in France's delegation: "This is huge, we don't understand. I don't know what happened. What more could we have done? Sportsmen, politicians, all French people were behind this candidature. I wonder if sometimes people don't want us."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg: "On behalf of all New Yorkers and New York's Olympic bid, I extend my sincere congratulations to London. London is a tremendous city and will undoubtedly host a superb Games in 2012."
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero: "The first thing to do in an Olympic event is to be sporting and congratulate the winner, the city of London. I also want to say how pleased I am with the very good work done by the Madrid candidacy. We almost reached the final."
Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov: "We are not disappointed. We are going to battle for the right to stage the Olympic Games in 2016."
