U.S. TOP 10

BOX-OFFICE ANALYSIS
The Jackal attacked the box-office last weekend, collecting more than 15 million dollars in its first three days. Starring Bruce Willis, Richard Gere and Sidney Poitier, the thriller is a remake of Fred Zinnemann’s classic film version of Frederick Forsyth’s best-seller, The Day Of The Jackal. Word of mouth is not really all that positive for the film, and its collection will probably drop over the coming weeks in the face of movies like Anastasia and Alien Resurrection. Willis plays the Jackal, who is out to hunt Poitier’s FBI director, and Gere plays an IRA gunman who is released from prison to prey on the hunter. The film is directed by Michael-Caton Jones, who earlier gave us Rob Roy, and the writer is Chuck Pfarrer, a former NAVY Seal. Universa, the studio behind the film, changed the film’s title from The Day Of The Jackal to The Jackal when Zinnemann protested. The movie opened across 2,100 plus screens, ending up with an average of slightly over 7,000 dollars. Starship Troopers fell by over 50 per cent in its second week, ending up in the second position with approximately 10 million dollars. The Little Mermaid came in at the third position, neck to neck at approximately the same gross. The film was on 2,000 plus screens as compared to the close to 3,000 screens of Starship Troopers. Disney’s strategy to reissue the classic to battle with Fox’s Anastasia worked. Anastasia also opened at the box-office last weekend, but on only one screen, collecting 130 thousand dollars over the opening week. Warner’s bad luck continued with The Man Who Knew Too Little, which came in at the fifth position, with Mad City being knocked right out of the Top Ten. The Man Who Knew To Little collected over 4.5 million dollars from more than 2,000 screens, with an average of less than 2,300 dollars per screen. The rest remained pretty much the same at the box-office. Devil’s Advocate was seventh, with Red Corner, Boogie Nights and Eve’s Bayou taking up the eighth, ninth and tenth positions respectively.
