Mumbai, September 16 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received a clearance from the Central Government for the construction of a 12 km-long tunnel from Marol to Ruparel college. The Rs 340 crore project will be funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The tunnel, having a diameter of 3.6 m, will be 70 m deep and will take 56 months to be completed. Additional municipal commissioner (projects) Manu Kumar Shrivastava, said that pipelines from Tansa, Vaitarna and Upper Vaitarna under this tunnel will be replaced. “There would be leakages, contamination and low pressure as the pipelines were old. After replacing them under the tunnel, there will be more water pressure,” he said.

Shrivastava added that citizens of G and H wards will benefit from the tunnel when completed. He also said there will be no digging of roads or traffic problems during the construction of this tunnel. “Wherever, there is less traffic and the area is empty, we will excavate shafts and then dig underground. There will be four shafts, in all,” he said.
