Chandigarh, December 27 Significant events
Community Radio: The first Community Radio Station, run by the students of Vivek High School, Sector 38, was set up. Around Rs 15 lakh was spent on the project. As many as 40 students have undergone training. The UT Education Department is also planning to set up a similar sort of thing for government school students. It is likely to become operational by next year. New schools: Five new government schools were set up this year by the UT Education Department to accommodate students of private schools. Schemes for girls, under-privileged and minorities: Many schemes for the under-privileged were floated this year. They have been offered free education and a way to earn for living by making candles and paper bags. For children working as daily wagers, the department has proposed a scheme of Rs 250 per month as scholarship. For girl students, fee has been be reduced to half for Class VIII up to Class XII. One seat in every class of government schools has been reserved for the children of Kashmiri origin. Community Education: Department encouraged people to come forward to educate the needy. Career Fest: A career fest was held by the education department for both government and private school students. Diwali mela held: Another first, a Diwali mela was organised by government school students.

Controversies
Teacher eloped and one dismissed for sexually harassing students: Sunil Kumar, a Hindi teacher at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, eloped with two students of Class X. He was dismissed from service. Another teacher of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, was dismissed from service after it was found that he sexually harassed a senior class student. Ryan School Issue: Ryan International Public School, Sector 49, remained in news through out the year, as the school had failed to get affiliation of the CBSE. The school had been functioning without the sanction of the authorities concerned. Singapore Trip: For the first time, an educational tour for the government school students was announced, and to select students to be sent on tour a Diwali mela was organised by the department. Those students who managed maximum sales were offered discounts on their air tickets. However, only the teachers went on tour. Misuse of PTA funds: Many government schools were caught in the PTA fund mismanagement controversy. Violence: One area where the department failed to take care was the violence among the school students. There were been numerous incidents where students entering into violent act.

Failed projects
Midday meal: The department kept on harping on mid-day scheme. Many meetings were held and funds were sanctioned, but nothing constructive happened in this regard. Even the official website of the department mentions that the scheme has been extended. Smart Schools: Four schools were identified for smart school projects. The concept, however, ran into controversies. And later transformed into a smart class concept, where it was decided that only one class would be converted into smart class. Free computer education: The department had announced free computer education for students from Class I to Class X. However, the project is yet to be realised. The tenders for setting up computers in the schools have been announced.
