Kolkata, January 7 Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi recognised Saswati Pal as the one who sang at the Krishto Utsav held at Santiniketan on December 25. He himself was present at the function.

“If I remember correctly she was one of the singers,” said the Governor, who paid a visit to Visva-Bharati today and met the students of Sangit Bhavan. As it turned out, his guess was absolutely correct.

Gandhi paid floral tributes to Saswati. Earlier, he visited the historic Chatimtala and Ananda Sadan, the girls’ hostel where the BMus student was shot dead by Amaresh Kundu.

Today, Visva-Bharati alongwith the schools and colleges of Bolpur remained closed. The teachers and students held a silent procession to mourn the death of Saswati.

The Governor told the students that he had come to share their grief. “I have not come here to offer you sympathy. I am not an outsider here. I am one of you,” said Gandhi, who instructed the Superintendent of Police and District Magistrate of Birbhum to arrange for the transportation of Saswati’s body to her home in Ghatal, Midnapore. The body of Kundu also was taken to his home in Ghatal for cremation.

In Kolkata, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said the government will enhance security at the campuses and hostels. “The incident is quite strange. The SP, Birbhum, has been asked to file a report. Police have been told to enhance vigil at all campuses and hostels,” he said.
