“After Singur and Nandigram, the state government is now bent on filling up water bodies to fill their pockets,” said Banerjee.
Blaming the mismanaged records of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for the situation, she said: “The civic body should dig up its records to determine whether the area is a water body or land.”
KMC’s assessment department records state that the area is a plot of land. But a list of water bodies prepared by the Project Management Unit of the civic body in 1995 describes the area as a water body, she said.
“The civic body should scan its records properly and state the character of the area,” added Banerjee.
Promising all help to the residents, the Trinamool chief stated that she is ready to move court to prevent any construction there.
The area had turned into a battlefield last Saturday with locals protesting against the filling up of the water body by Mani Group, a real estate developer.
While the locals asserted that it was a water body, the Mani Group claimed it was vacant land. The eleven arrested for the incident were released on bail today.
