Kolkata, February 2 Reminiscent of the Rizwanur-Priyanka case, a 24-year-old youth was beaten up by his wife’s relatives at Howrah station this afternoon for marrying her against her father’s wishes.

Mohammed Abdullah, a resident of Giribabu Lane in Hare Street, had just got down from the Himgiri Express along with his wife Afroza Lodhi (19), a resident of CR Avenue, when he was assaulted.

On-duty policemen rescued the youth and took him and Afroza to Howrah government railway police station.

According to the police, Abdullah and Afroza had fled from their homes on December 31. They had gone to Abdullah’s sister’s home in Jammu and Kashmir where they were married on January 5. Afroza later rang up her residence and told her father of the marriage and their date of return to the city.

Afroza’s father claimed that his daughter was a minor and Abdullah had forced her into the marriage.

However, Afroza told the police that she was an adult and showed her birth certificate to prove her statement. She added that she eloped with Abdullah since her father was against the relationship.

“As Abdullah did not lodge an official complaint, we did not arrest the men involved in the assault. The couple was escorted to Hare Street police station later,” said Officer-in-Charge of Howrah railway police station, Taj Mohammed.
