Jilke, Shilpi bow out of Central Excise AITA Open

Kolkata, February 5 Third seeded Jilke Nelord of Delhi and fourth seeded Shilpi Jaiswal of Bihar crashed out of the SPS Elegant Central Excise AITA Open Grass Court Tennis Championship 2008 that started today.

Akshita Basavaraju of Karnataka beat Nelord 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals stage of ladies singles while Tamil Nadu’s Grace Hannah ousted Patna girl Shilpi Jaiswal 6-3, 6-4.

Second seed Ragini Vimal and fifth seed Shivika Burman, both city girls, also advanced to the quarter-finals. Defending champion Ragini took little time in beating Chennai’s B Svarupa Raadhae 6-3, 6-2. Shivika steamrolled Richa Valechha 6-2, 6-0.

In the men’s singles first round matches, two Kolkata lads managed to stay afloat. Harshvardhan Thirani justified his wild card entry by defeating qualifier from Karnataka Rafiq Paruti 6-2, 6-4 and qualifier Vinod Kumar Sewa made the most of wild card too by bulldozing Yashwant Pulumati 6-2, 6-0. Thirani now faces top seed VM Ranjeet, while Sewa will take on second seed Vinod Sridhar.
