The injured maintained that SFI supporters had beaten them up, as they were pasting posters on the walls, for a seminar to be organised by Bengali magazine Adhek Akash, published by the students.
According to eyewitnesses, a second-year Bengali (Honours) student, Moloy Bhattacharya, was putting up the posters when an altercation broke out between him and SFI supporters.
Reportedly, when SFI supporters allegedly enquired about the posters, Moloy asked them to see for themselves what they meant.
A scuffle ensued, in which three students — Bhattacharya, Debjyoti Mondal, a third-year-student of the Bengali department and the cultural secretary of the college, and Agnishwar Chakraborty, an ex-student of the college associated with the magazine — received injuries.
“About 20 to 25 students beat us up and we sustained serious injuries,” said Mondal. The students have lodged a complaint with the Jorasanko police station against four individuals.
The SFI, however, had a different story to tell. They maintained that their supporters were beaten up in the altercation.
“Mayuk Biswas, a third-year political science student was beaten up by students belonging to some Naxalite factions,” said SFI district secretary Kaustav Chatterjee.
