Retired judge to probe police firing at Dinhata

Kolkata, February 14 The state government today named the former judge of the Calcutta High Court, Narayan Chandra Sil, as the one-man commission to look into the February 5 police firing at Dinhata in Cooch Behar district that killed five Forward Bloc supporters and a member of the NVF.

Justice Sil, who retired from on October 2005, is currently working as a member of the State Human Rights Commission.

He has also served as secretary in the department of law and justice of the state government.

“Sil has been given six months to file his report. Now, we are working on the terms of reference that will be handed over to the commission soon,” said Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said.

Justice Sil, meanwhile, said that he had not received any official letter from the government.

“I cannot say when the commission will start its work because I am yet to know the terms of reference,” he told The Indian Express.

The Water Resources Development Bhavan at Salt Lake is likely to house the office of the commission.
