Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has already written a letter to the Centre in this regard. The state government believes that the extension would help in maintaining the growth of the IT sector in the state.
“The STPI scheme should be extended till 2020. There are talks about the scheme being replaced with the SEZ policy. But only the large IT players who have a lot of capital would be able to set up the SEZs. STP is required to encourage the small and medium IT entrepreneurs,” said state IT minister Debesh Das at the inaugural ceremony of INFOCOM 2007-08, an IT exhibition-cum-seminar here today.
The STPI, an autonomous society under the Union IT ministry, was formed to provide fiscal incentives, infrastructure support and a single-window mechanism to obtain necessary clearances for IT companies with a view to encourage exports in the country.
