Kolkata, February 22 The economic offences wing of the detective department arrested real estate developer Amit Kumar Mitra and two of his associates on Friday for evading stamp duty to the tune of Rs 60 lakh. Mitra was picked up from his Salt Lake office following a complaint registered by the Alipore sub-treasury.

In January, the office had discovered that Mitra had shown the stamp duty applicable on a prime piece of property in Alipore as just Rs 60. “Mitra owned a real estate firm named Concord and had a power-of-attorney from one Bimal Krishna to deal with plot number 2/5, Judges Court Road. Mitra had entered into an agreement with Unity Realty and Developers Ltd to sell the said property for Rs 56 crore. Out of this, Mitra has already received Rs 32 crore,” said DC (DD) Jawed Shamim.

He added that Mitra had later manipulated the property sales deed to show the property as worth Rs 10 crore.
