Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty along with Janpath Parisevan Majdoor Union and Truck Owners Association organised a protest meeting at the Netaji Indoor Stadium to denounce the incident and garner support for the family of driver Abodh Kumar Singh.
Leaders of labour unions like CITU and AITUC described the incident as harrowing. They added that such incidents had rarely occurred in the state.
As the incident was being discussed, money started pouring in for the deceased’s family. At the end of the meeting, financial aid worth Rs 3,99,001 was collected to help the family which had lost their only earning member.
“We heard that our father had an accident. Later we were told that he was burnt alive and stabbed,” recounted Biswajit Singh, the eldest of the two sons of Singh. His mother Baby Singh tried to control herself as she listened to her son.
The protest meeting drew people in large numbers. Leaders such as Kshiti Goswami, Kironmoy Nanda, Pratim Chatterjee, Tollywood stars like Ranjit Mullick, Haranath Chatterjee.
