Kolkata, February 29 The students of vocational education streams will have to undergo a test for getting into the polytechnic diploma examination. About 10 per cent students in the polytechnics in Bengal, with an intake of 8,165 students per year, are inducted through a lateral entry from the vocational training disciplines.

Minister for Technical Education Chakradhar Maikap said that the students will have to sit for a test from this academic session.

“The students getting admission through the lateral entry procedure do not have a basic understanding of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This creates problems in the longer run.”

At present, there are 35,000 students in vocational streams who are deemed to be equal to the higher secondary passouts.

The students who seek entry into polytechnics are taken on the basis of a state-level examination after their higher secondary exams.
